A Flotilla of Avocets

American Avocets gather in large winter flocks on interior saline lakes. Emil photographed these on Owens Lake, midway between Mt. Whitney and Death Valley. He's also seen a few wandering in the desert brush near the Eureka Valley Dunes as well as on the beach in Santa Barbara, quite a range of habitats for what one normally thinks of as a shorebird.
