Three Long-Billed Curlews

Long-Billed Curlews, some of the largest of the shorebirds, often hang out together, milling around at the edge of the surf, then wading in to feed. Emil spotted these on East Beach in Santa Barbara watching the sunbathers watch them. This is their characteristic winter plumage.
